postpartum check up time!

5 weeks in, and here we are again.

20140721_153820_1

the last time i sat on this table i was 40 weeks preggo and 2 cms dilated.  just in my thoughts as i waited for Dr. A. lol.

soon as i walked in the office my eyes were immediately drawn to the tools on the counter though, especially that darn speculum. hate it. and that clicking noise as it opens drives me craaaazy.

however, it was standing in the way of me and the gym so i tolerated it for yet another 60 seconds.  i know i'll be seeing it for the rest of my life so i'll make peace with it some day.

aaaand we're done here!  Dr. A cleared me to go back to my usual workout routine whenever i am ready.  however, i'm taking it super, duper slow.  teaching vs. taking a class are two different experiences for me as i've mentioned before.  kinda like Beyonce vs. Sasha Fierce-- falling down the stairs and all.  i don't want to push it too fast too soon, but ultimately i will be taking classes again, adding the weights back into my routine slowly but surely, and paying attention to how my body responds.  listen to your OB ladies, and listen to your body. i'll discuss some of my fitness goals in the next post though!

afterwards, i decided to share my very first workout at home with my Mr. Piggy! Sonny is NOT feeling Odego's nickname but because he grunts and snorts like crazy when he is hungry it was only right.

#sorrynotsorry, hubs.

i'm using body weight for these super basic moves for the most part as Dego only weighs like 9 lbs.  it's perfect cause i'm forced to go super slow while i hold my precious cargo!

  • squats - looking up and out at the ceiling while performing squats helps to keep my back flat and knees behind my toes.

  • plie squats - you don't have to go deep! gradually work your way back to that level.

  • side bends - try these to start and keep a flat back and elevated chest for better posture.  my postpartum core strength is loads better this time around as i worked my obliques throughout my pregnancy.

  • modified push ups with kisses :)

remember moms, my pace is not your pace and vice versa.  if you feel any pain or discomfort, STOP.  and if you haven't been cleared to do these exercises yet, don't even think about it!  if you have been cleared but still not ready, go outside and walk, hit the elliptical, or start with some postpartum yoga.  if moms could have their pre-preggo bodies back sooner than later, then let's be honest-- i'm positive a vast majority would jump at the chance to.  my message is to first and foremost show how proper nutrition and physical activity can aid in doing just that.  make no mistake, this is not a race.  i repeat...this is not a race.  i exercise because i love it. i make time for it because it's a priority in my life.  there is absolutely nothing unrealistic about eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly during pregnancy. nothing. my journey may not be typical or the norm, but my results are very real.  my skin gets thicker by the day because of Instagram lol, but i won't apologize or feel bad for being blessed to have an active pregnancy (i don't take it for granted one bit) and/or living a healthy lifestyle.  ANY mom can do it and i hope to inspire other women enough to even try!

semi-rant over.

i stopped at GNC on the way home to try some new Quest Bar flavors before i buy a whole box of them and i'm excited!  they have been helping with my sweet cravings and i don't mind the fiber and protein that comes with them.  they're all natural, high fiber, gluten-free, 1g of sugar, and low carb. i bought hubs the Cookies & Cream flavor which he swallowed on sight (which is why it's not pictured) and i managed to get a piece and loved it too.  it nipped his Oreo cookie craving right in the bud, sweet!

Q: what is your favorite Quest Bar flavor?

glory to God! we made it! 40 weeks in the bag.PhotoGrid_1402620251228

wednesday i had (what i hope to be) my very last routine check up with my OB before meeting Odego.

CYMERA_20140613_213959 (1)

did some reading to pass the time in the waiting area and my eyes were immediately drawn to "why it's OK to get an epidural" after picking up this magazine, lol.  this birth plan is the same as my first... to give it my best shot  naturally, and call for the epi if i need it. God has already gone before me and everything is in His hands. everything.

CYMERA_20140611_193456

i love that my OB involves Chiso somehow at every visit.  especially when i forget to bring his ipad!  i just love her to pieces and thank God for connecting us.  according to Chi's calculations, my belly is currently measuring at 39.7 cms (the number your belly measures in cms usually corresponds with your current week, fyi).  pretty happy to have progressed to 2 cms dilated without feeling a thing at that.  well, what i HAVE felt has not been painful at all, rather.

CYMERA_20140613_220252

so i left my appointment with JUST enough time to hit the gym for one last TKB (turbo kickboxing) class!!! i also just wanted to tell the best kickboxing instructor i know that i'd be seeing her in a few weeks, or whenever i'm cleared to come back.

CYMERA_20140613_220149

i started that day with lean turkey sausage, 1 whole egg, 3 egg whites, the last of a ripe avocado, all over  a sweet potato hash i could have sworn i had already added  to my blog, sorry guys!! here are the ingredients i sautéed in my no stick skillet with 1 tbsp coconut oil:

  • 1 small peeled/cubed sweet potato (microwave for 1 min first to make it easier to chop)
  • 1 yelllow oinion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup cubed zucchini
  • 1/4 cup cubed yellow squash
  • 1/2 cup  cubed red bell pepper
  • red pepper flakes
  • sea salt (i used liquid aminos) & pepper
  • fresh chopped cilantro

and i scarfed down those rotisserie chicken breast deli sammiches on Sara Lee whole wheat 45 calories & delightful bread and raw carrots after the TKB class.

here's dinner from tonight with the recipe as promised:

Lemon Pepper Shrimp Scampi Spaghetti Squash

the stuff:

  • 1 lb raw, de-veined, shelled shrimp
  • 1 roasted small - medium spaghetti squash  ( i throw the whole thing in my oven on 375 for 45 min)
  • 1/2 cup whole grape tomatoes
  • 1 cup chopped red bell pepper (optional)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1-2 tbsp or more lemon pepper seasoning
  • cracked black pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1/2 lemon

do this:

  1. heat a large wok to med-high heat and add 1 tbsp olive oil.
  2. add 2 tbsp garlic and stir constantly so it doesn't burn for about 2 minutes; add shrimp.
  3. season shrimp with 1 tbsp lemon pepper seasoning and black pepper; remove from wok and set aside.
  4. add in another tbsp olive oil and the remaining 2 tbsp of garlic; cook for about 1 minute.
  5. add bell pepper if wanted at this point and let it cook/soften for 2 minutes. if no bell pepper, just add cooked spaghetti squash into wok along with another tbsp or two of lemon pepper seasoning and black pepper. mix well.
  6. halve the grape tomatoes then add them to your wok along with the cooked shrimp and cilantro; mix very well.
  7. squeeze the fresh lemon over the top of everything and serve!

38 weeks - i should pack

 1 cm dilated celebration pose!

20140604_100242_1-1

my OB checked me at my most recent visit yesterday aaaaaand, well, i'll take it.

CYMERA_20140605_154819

one is better than zero, right?  right!  she then reminded me of some natural ways labor can be brought on, but my mom is not out for the Summer until this friday (she's a teacher) so we will hold off on those for the moment. lol.  we are in no rush anyway, seriously.

i have, however, finally start packing my hospital bag.

20140604_113411_1

now that i have a bigger, better (cleaner) bag!

20140605_125800_1

i found this J. J. Cole satchel bag in Babies R Us that caught my eye (and Chiso's apparently) so i rolled with it. this is my running list so far:

Screen Shot 2014-06-05 at 1.27.20 PM

and this is what i have going as of today:

20140605_125736_1

in my bag:

  • slimming black nursing cami (Target, 22.99)

  • swaddle blankets

  • burp cloths

  • Odego's going home fit and extra onesies

  • car seat + head support

  • diapers & wipes

  • travel toiletries

and the infant car seat is by the door!  currently researching double seated strollers... that would be smart.

CYMERA_20140604_192657

i may have very well taken my last Wednesday night Turbo Kickboxing class before Odego gets here... we'll see what happens!

Q: moms, what did you bring to the hospital that you should have left at home OR that you wish you would have brought with you?
